The 16th the queens lancers was a cavalry regiment of the british army first raised in 1759it saw service for two centuries before being amalgamated with the 5th royal irish lancers to form the 16th 5th lancers in 1922. The 16th 5th the queens royal lancers was a cavalry regiment of the british armyit was formed by the amalgamation of the 16th the queens lancers and the 5th royal irish lancers in 1922 and after service in the second world war and the gulf war amalgamated with the 17th 21st lancers to form the queens royal lancers in 1993. The scarlet lancers 1846 in 1846 all light cavalry regiments were instructed by horse guards to adopt blue tunics in order to distinguish them from the heavy cavalry the 16th lancers had adopted scarlet in 1830 and had become attached to it. The regiment was formed in 1993 by the amalgamation of the 16th 5th queens royal lancers with the 17th 21st lancers from its formation the regiment served in the armoured role with first challenger 1 then challenger 2however in 2005 as part of the re organisation of the army the regiment started converting to the formation reconnaissance role re equipping with the scimitar armoured . 16th the queens lancers by the outbreak of the first world war the 16th lancers had amassed more battle honours than any other british cavalry regiment and they were distinguished by being the first regiment to use the lance in combat in 1914 the regiment was part of the british expeditionary force sent to france
